In Chinese society today, many people hold varying opinions about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Some have raised constructive criticisms that deserve serious reflection within the profession. However, many more seem driven by prejudice, waving the banner of “science” while presenting arguments and logic fundamentally at odds with the scientific spirit they claim to champion.

Most TCM practitioners choose not to engage with such critics, observing them with cool indifference and letting them fade into irrelevance on their own. But I don’t think that’s the right approach. These biased individuals have grown emboldened by the silence, interpreting it as acquiescence. They’ve become increasingly brazen, and it’s time someone punctured their arrogance. If anyone wishes to debate these issues, my door is open.

A friend messaged me on WeChat today: someone had posted eight questions attacking TCM, and he wanted to hear my responses.

1. TCM is circular reasoning — pseudoscience.

2. TCM graduates have worse job prospects than Feng Shui practitioners.

3. TCM hospitals fly the banner of Chinese medicine but practice Western medicine — and their Western medicine can’t hold a candle to dedicated Western hospitals.

4. TCM doctors have been marginalized. Tell someone you’re a TCM doctor and mainstream physicians will scoff at you.

5. They say every profession produces its masters — but TCM never will, because it’s all circular reasoning that sounds plausible no matter how you spin it. No amount of research will yield any real substance.

6. TCM doctors can’t treat patients without relying on modern medicine.

7. Studying TCM for 5, 7, or even 8 years wastes not only money but irreplaceable youth.

8. State support for TCM is just interest groups manipulating policy to pocket money — after all, why don’t their own children study TCM?

These eight questions may appear bold and incisive, but they are actually quite shallow — kindergarten-level stuff, really. They’re not worth serious discussion. Instead, I fired back eight mirror-image questions for reflection:

1. Western medicine is circular reasoning — pseudoscience. The causes of many diseases remain unknown.

2. Western medicine graduates have worse job prospects than biology majors.

3. Western medicine hospitals fly the banner of science but essentially run pharmaceutical retail operations — and how does their medicine compare to what’s available in America?

4. Chinese Western medicine has been marginalized. Tell a Western doctor you practice in China and mainstream Western physicians will scoff at you.

5. They say every profession produces its masters — but Chinese Western medicine never will, because it learned everything from abroad and simply parrots what others say. No amount of research will yield any original substance.

6. Western medicine doctors can’t treat patients without relying on modern medical technology.

7. Studying Western medicine for 5, 7, or even 8 years wastes not only money but irreplaceable youth.

8. State support for Western medicine is just interest groups manipulating policy to pocket money — after all, why don’t their own children study Western medicine?

当前，中国社会中有许多人对中医有或多或少的看法，很多人提出了建设性的意见，值得业内深思，但更多的人似乎是存有偏见，打折所谓科学的旗号，但其表达的观点、逻辑与他们所谓的科学格格不入，针对这类人，业内大部分人士都不表态，以冷眼旁观，任其自由自灭的态度对待他们。但我不认为这样做不好，这些有偏见的人看到中医界无人还击，高兴过头了，现在已愈发猖狂，必须要打击一下他们的气焰。如果有谁想在这些问题上辩论，尽请找我。

1.中医是自圆其说，伪科学。

2.中医找工作的比不上人家学风水的。

3.中医医院打着中华医学的旗帜，干着西医的勾当。可是你的西医怎比得上西医院的西医。

4.中医医生已被边缘化了，如果说你是个中医医生，主流医生都会对你嗤之以鼻。

5.人家说行行出状元，可中医还真出不了状元，因为中医本来就是自圆其说，所以怎么讲都讲得通。所以你无论怎么钻研，都钻不出所以然。

6.中医医生如果不借助现代医学根本就看不了病。

7.中医学5年，7年，甚至8年浪费的不仅是金钱，还有找不回来的青春。

8.国家要大力发展中医，那是某些利益集团瞎忽悠圈钱的套路。试问：他们的子女为什么不去学中医？

这八个问题看似非常神勇，其实层次很低，完全是幼儿园水平的，根本不值得探讨，我直接回了他八个问题，仅供思考：

1.西医是自圆其说，伪科学，很多病的原因未知。

2.西医找工作的比不上人家学生物的。

3.西医医院打着医学的旗帜，干着卖药的勾当。可是你的药怎比得上美国的药。
