Save Chinese Doctors and Launch Special Training Courses on Doctor-Patient Relationships

Four days ago, Yang Wen, the deputy chief physician of the Emergency Department at the Civil Aviation General Hospital, was deliberately and brutally murdered at her department workstation. Over the past few days, the responses from all walks of life have been exactly as expected — still so pale, numb, and powerless. What is absurd is that for such a straightforward and serious violent crime, it took the Beijing Municipal Procuratorate three full days to issue the arrest warrant. China still has a very long way to go in modernizing its social governance capabilities.

In the American TV series Grey’s Anatomy, when a doctor was shot inside the hospital, the hospital’s first response was to go on lockdown and shut down entirely. At the same time, all medical staff in the department and at the scene were suspended and received psychological counseling, only returning to work after passing an evaluation. Of course, we are not an “evil capitalist country.” When our doctor lies in a pool of blood, other doctors must continue to take care of the murderer — repaying evil with kindness, playing the saint.

It is a pity that China’s saints have been demonized for so many years.

At this stage, 99.99% of doctors in tertiary hospitals at or above the provincial level are model representatives of medical benevolence. The state pays an enormous cost to train a doctor like Yang Wen. To save costs for the country, reduce losses, and maintain social stability, I believe the education and training system implemented in Xinjiang in recent years is a method well worth learning from.

A doctor-patient relationship training center should be established in each province, staffed with full-time instructors and managers to regularly conduct education centered on doctor-patient relationship themes. Anyone who spreads views detrimental to the harmony between doctors and patients, is suspected of being a medical troublemaker, or is likely to disrupt public order in hospitals should be compelled to enter the training center for study. Only when their study is deemed satisfactory may they return to society.

Only in this way can the doctor-patient relationship remain harmonious and stable, doctors can work with peace of mind, leaders will no longer be tormented by these matters, and the operating costs of society will be reduced.

We once again call for the early launch of special training courses on doctor-patient relationships.
