Ever since I typed my first string of characters on an 80486 PC back in 1994, I have been inextricably bound to computers. From DOS 6.0 to Windows 8, from CCDOS to Office, from Jiangmin Antivirus to 360, from LOGO to C# — nineteen years have slipped by in the blink of an eye. Looking back to when I participated in NOIP a decade ago, computers were still something of a rarity; owning a 32 MB USB flash drive was enough to make you the envy of your peers. Yet by the time I took part in ACM competitions five years ago, computers had already found their way into countless homes, and “going online” had long shed its once-pejorative undertones.
Over the past decade-plus, the IT industry has surged forward at a breathtaking pace, transforming people’s lives in profound and irreversible ways — and, almost imperceptibly, reshaping our lifestyles and habits along with it. Today, armed with smartphones and high-speed networks, we can step out the door without a map and without asking for directions. Far from home in a foreign land, we can video-chat over the internet and save a fortune in international calling fees. The explosive growth of social media lets us check in on our friends’ latest updates anytime, anywhere — by the roadside, at the bus stop, even in the restroom — scrolling through our phones has simply become part of the fabric of daily life.
Yet this shift in lifestyle has taken a real toll on our health. According to surveys, cervical spondylosis has become the single most prevalent condition in the IT industry — bar none. Chronic diseases that once typically appeared only in people in their fifties and sixties are increasingly striking the young. Diabetes, hypertension, and coronary heart disease are now commonplace among thirty-somethings. Sudden cardiac death and cancer are quietly setting their sights on this demographic as well. Dear comrades, take a careful, honest look at yourself — are you truly healthy?
