On the Similarities and Differences in the Development of Chinese and Western Medicine (7)

Similarities

① Both TCM and Western medicine are vital components of world medicine.

② In ancient times, because primitive lifestyles were broadly similar, the origins of Chinese and Western medicine were also largely the same. The earliest medical activities sprouted from the daily practices of primitive communities.

③ The origins of both TCM and Western medicine were empirical and non-regional in nature.

④ Both arose from the same fundamental motivation — the tireless pursuit of human health and well-being.

⑤ During their formative periods, each produced numerous medical treatises, accumulated profound medical theory, yielded many medical achievements, gathered rich clinical experience and techniques, and nurtured large numbers of outstanding physicians.

⑥ Throughout the long course of history, both have reached glorious peaks and fallen into deep valleys, yet both still stand tall in the forest of world medicine.

⑦ The development of both TCM and Western medicine has been influenced by the economic and political conditions of their respective nations.

Differences

① Different Modes of Thinking: TCM is grounded in Chinese philosophy, interwoven with the concepts of yin-yang and the five elements from the I Ching. It is characterized by the holistic concept of “unity of heaven and humanity,” with a relatively abstract mode of thinking that draws on clinical experience and foundational theory, employing analogical reasoning. The rapid development of Western medicine, by contrast, was rooted in the cultural and scientific foundations laid by the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution. Free thought and expression helped Western medicine break free from the shackles of religious dogma, while new breakthroughs in clinical medicine in the 19th century — thanks to advances in biochemistry and basic theory — gradually revealed the essential nature of the human body.

② Social and Cultural Backgrounds: Ancient China’s agrarian society planted the concept of “unity of heaven and humanity” deep in people’s hearts. The cultural ethos of the Doctrine of the Mean shaped the understanding of yin-yang balance, the coordination of the five viscera, and the internal influences upon the individual. The principles of a benevolent healer and a great physician’s sincerity had already become the way of medicine. Western medicine, on the other hand, emphasizes the exploration of logical and scientific truth as the basis for deriving theory. The invention of the microscope, the discovery of cells, and the establishment of various tissues and systems extended the linear mode of thinking characteristic of the West.

③ Historical Trajectory: TCM originated, took shape, and developed within China, characterized by its holistic perspective and pattern differentiation in treatment, spanning a long history. Western medicine developed in Western European countries and later across Europe and the Americas, characterized by reductionism and disease-based treatment, spanning a relatively shorter history.
