The ginkgo avenue at Beijing’s Diaoyutai is quite famous — it’s one of the iconic scenes of autumn in the capital. Yet despite having lived in Beijing for five years, I had never been there. This morning, after finishing a lecture at the Yuetan community with time to spare, I hopped on a shared bike and pedaled over to the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. The scenic avenue runs along the outside of the compound, in a public area, and it was packed. Many people had come to admire the golden leaves — though, unfortunately, it was still a bit early. Most of the foliage was still green, a stark contrast to the ginkgo trees in Beijing’s suburbs, which had nearly lost all their leaves by now.
The avenue is quite long and well-suited for medium-to-long telephoto work. However, there are no elevated vantage points, so if you want to capture depth and perspective, you’d probably need to bring a tripod. Given its fame, waiting for a moment when the crowd thins out is nearly impossible anyway.
I plan to come back and shoot in about two weeks.
